Tripod - Platform
The top portion of the tripod is mostly made up of the triangular shaped platform to which the top of the legs are attached. The images below at center and to the right show the box shape used to connect the fluid head to the tripod. Don't become confused by this item. I could have just as easily used a bolt to go up through the top of the tripod and screw directly into the fluid head. The box is not necessary and was a goof on my part. It works fine however, so I plan to keep using it.

The image above to the right also shows the fluid head that I use If any of you are curious. This is a great fluid head that cost me around $50. They show up on ebay pretty often, so check there if you are interested.
